Cajuns Split Games on Day 2 at Easton Spring Fling

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns, ranked 14th in the country, opened play on day two of the 2007 Easton Spring Fling, hosted by the University of Alabama, with a 5-2 win in Saturday's first game against Seton Hall.

With the win the Cajuns improved to 20-2 on the season, while the Pirates of Seton Hall fall to 1-13.

Holly Tankersley tossed a complete game and improved to 8-2, with the win.  Seton Hall's Kim Schweitzer fell to 0-8, with the loss, as she also pitched the entire game for the Pirates.

The Cajuns got on the board early as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

With one out Tankersley singled to centerfield and with two outs Desi Chatman walked.  Melissa Verde singled to center scoring Tankersley from second, scoring Louisiana's first run. Meagan Godwin reached on an error and Lana Bowers walked with the bases loaded to give the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.

UL added a single run in the bottom of the second inning on a Tankersley solo home run, her sixth of the season.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Cajuns extended the lead to 5-0 on solo homeruns from Codi Runyan, her eighth of the season and Lacey Bertrucci, her third of the season.

In the top of the seventh inning, Seton Hall plated two runs on a Laura Baranek lead-off single and doubles from Amanda Winn and Leah Menichetti.

Runyan, Tankersley, and Bertucci, the top three hitters in the Cajuns line-up each had two hits.  Verde and Bowers added hits for the Cajuns.

The Ragin’ Cajuns completed the weekend sweep of Seton Hall with the victory. On Friday, the Ragin’ Cajuns took an 18-0 win in five innings over the Pirates.

GAME 2 vs. Alabama

Following Louisiana's win over Seton Hall on Saturday morning, the Cajuns turned around and faced the #5 ranked team in the country, the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Alabama scored a single run in their half of the first inning, two more in the fifth and added three runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 6-0 win over the Cajuns. 

Chrissy Owens pitched a complete game shut-out for the Crimson Tide and improved her record to 9-0 on the season.  Brittany Cuevas suffered her first loss of the season and her career for the Cajuns and now stands at 11-1.

Alabama first baseman, Charlotte Morgan, had an RBI in the first inning on a fielder's choice. 

Michelle Menningmann led off the Tide fifth with a solo homerun and Mandy Burford added an RBI single upping the Tide’s lead to 3-0 after five complete.

Brittany Rogers added a single driving in Alabama's final two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Louisiana had six hits in the game against Owens. Holly Tankersley led the Cajun hitting attack with two singles.  Meagan Godwin had a two out double in the Cajuns sixth inning.  Codi Runyan and Karli Hubbard added singles.

The Cajuns mounted their best rally in the top of the third inning as Runyan led off with a single to left field and Tankersley was hit by a pitch.  Lacey Bertucci's shot to third was fielded by Alambama third baseman Kelley Montalvo on a spectacular back handed play, turning a potential double down the line into a double play.

With the loss the Cajuns fall to 20-3 and Alabama improves to a perfect 19-0.  The Cajuns will be back in action on Sunday afternoon at 1:30, as they get another shot at the Crimson Tide in the final game of the Easton Spring Fling Tournament.
