LAFAYETTE-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Northwestern State 10-5 on Wednesday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

With the win, the Ragin’ Cajuns improve to 10-0 on the year extending their winning streak to double-digits.  UL is now just three games shy of tying the all-time school record for most victories to start the season set in 1994 when the Cajuns started 13-0.

The Cajuns were aided by Jonathan Lucroy who went 4-for-5 on the night driving in a career high six RBI, while scoring three runs.  Lucroy finished the night with a pair of singles, a double and his first homerun of the season.  Three of his four hits drove in two RBI.

Lucroy had a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth which gave the Cajuns the lead, which they would not relinquish.  Lucroy’s two-run homer in the sixth helped the Ragin’ Cajuns extend their lead.

Lucroy’s six RBI on the night tied a career high for the Umatilla, Fla. native.  The junior had six runs batted in his freshman year against Lamar on March 22, 2005 and six his sophomore season against Arkansas State in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on May 24, 2006.

Lucroy was one of four Cajuns to have multiple hits in the game.  Nolan Gisclair, Jefferies Tatford and Devery Van De Keere all had two hits apiece on the night.  Van De Keere was the only other Cajuns player with multiple RBI on the night.

After entering the game in relief, Brent Solich earned the win for the Cajuns.  He tossed 4.1 innings scattering three hits and allowing just one run.  Solich fanned five batters while issuing just one free pass.

The Demons were the first team to scratch the scoreboard.  With two outs in the second inning, the Cajuns hit a NSU batter with a pitch.  He came around to score as the next batter doubled to right centerfield.  Trailing 1-0 with a runner on second, the Cajuns surrendered their first homerun of the season.  The Cajuns recorded the final out of the inning, but after an inning and a half of play, they trailed 3-0.

The Cajuns threatened in the bottom half of the second inning.  Tatford continued his hot play and doubled to right field to lead off the inning.  A fly ball moved Tatford to third base, but a strikeout and a fly ball ended the inning and the Ragin’ Cajuns threat.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Cajuns tied the score.  With one out, Devon Bourque walked.  He moved to second base on a fielding error as the Demons attempted to turn a double play.  With two runners on and two outs, Lucroy doubled to left field to plate two runners.  A double by Tatford scored Lucroy and knotted the score at 3-3.

The Demons responded with a run in the fourth inning.  With one out, the Cajuns hit a batter with a pitch.  A double plated the runner and allowed Northwestern State to regain the lead.

The Cajuns took the lead in the fifth inning.  Alexander led off the inning with a single up the middle.  Gisclair attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but beat the throw for an infield single.  A wild pitch advanced the runners.  A single to right field by Lucroy plated the two runners and gave the Cajuns their first lead o the night.  A single by Scott Hawkins moved Lucroy to third base.  After Hawkins stole second base, Van De Keere singled through the right side to plate the two runners and give the Cajuns a 7-4 advantage.  Bourque singled to centerfield to plate the final runner of the inning.

In the sixth inning the Cajuns added a pair of insurance runs.  Gisclair bunted for a single and advanced to second base on a throwing error by the Demons.  A balk moved Gisclair to third base.  Lucroy hit his first homerun of the season to give the Cajuns a 10-4 lead after six innings of play.

Northwestern State cut into the lead in the seventh inning.  With two outs, the Cajuns walked a batter.  He came around to score on a NSU triple.

The score would remain 10-5 over the final two innings giving the Cajuns their 10th win of the season.

The Ragin’ Cajuns return to action this weekend as they head to Hattiesburg, Miss. to take on Southern Mississippi.  Friday’s game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday’s game slated for 1:00 p.m.
