Baseball Signees

Ragin' Cajuns Ink 12 in Early Signing Period (Nov. 15, 2006)

LAFAYETTE-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team announced the signing of 12 recruits during the early signing period.

Of the Cajuns 12 signees, ten are from the state of Louisiana, while UL signed one each from Georgia and Florida.

Heading up the Ragin’ Cajuns signing class is Thad Griffen.  Griffen is a Lake Charles product out of Barbe HS.  He is a dual threat as a pitcher and a catcher.  Offensively, Griffen hit .327, with six homeruns, 11 doubles and 25 runs batted in.  He collected 32 hits with an on-base percentage of .431 and a slugging percentage of .622 as a catcher.

On the mound, he went 8-1 with a 1.91 ERA in 59 innings of work.  Griffen surrendered 48 hits while striking out 70 and only walking 27.  He was first team All-District and All-Southwest Louisiana selection helping the Buccaneers to a state championship.  To go along with a 90-mph fastball, Griffen is also an excellent defensive catcher who is projected to be a powerful bat in the Cajuns lineup.

The Cajuns scored a trio of signees from Lafayette – Brian Bowman, Michael Cook and Dayton Marze.

Bowman is an outfielder from Lafayette High School.  He hit .377 for the Lions as a junior with three homeruns.  Bowman is fleet footed with 6.5 speed and is projected to bat in the top of the lineup.

Cook also comes to the Cajuns from Lafayette High.  He recorded a 5-1 record as a junior, tossing 38 innings.  Cook boasted a 1.84 ERA fanning 34 batters while walking just 16.  To go along with his pitching statistics, Cook also batted .337 with seven homers and 24 runs batted in.

A Teurlings product, Marze is a right-handed pitcher who earned an 8-1 record as a junior.  He tossed 65 innings, recording 73 strikeouts.  For the year, he boasted a 2.45 ERA, earning him 2nd Team All-District and 2nd Team All-Acadiana honors.

The Cajuns signed a pair of right-handed pitchers from LSU-Eunice, Matthew Broussard and Luke Wagley.

A Breaux Bridge native, Broussard pitched 51 innings, collecting 62 strikeouts while allowing only 22 walks.  He registered a 2.05 earned run average and collected a pair of saves for the JUCO nation champions.

Wagley, a Baton Rouge product, tossed 64 innings for LSU-E.  He surrendered 58 hits, allowing just 24 earned runs, garnering him a 2.61 ERA.  Wagley struck out 72 batters while allowing just 31 free passes.

The Cajuns final four Louisiana signees are infielder Greg Fontenot, outfielder Matthew Goulas, and pitchers Patrick Holloway and Blake Wascom.

Fontenot hit .348 with 16 RBI and 14 stolen bases as a junior at Acadiana High School.  The Scott native also hit .342 with a .413 on-base-percentage for the Louisiana Legends in the summer of 2006.

Goulas signed with the Cajuns from Catholic High School in New Iberia.  He hit .360 as a junior with six homeruns, 24 RBI, while stealing 10 bases.  A quality defensive outfielder, Goulas can play all three outfield positions.

An Opelousas Catholic High School product, Holloway hurled 73 innings on his way to a 1st Team All-State selection.  He recorded 78 strikeouts, while walking just 28.  Holloway boasted a 9-3 record and a 2.02 ERA.

Wascom, a native of Walker, went 4-0 with a 1.62 ERA at Walker High School.  He pitched 26 innings, fanning 29 batters surrendering just six walks.  Wascom was named All-District as a junior.

The Ragin’ Cajuns lone pair of out of state signees are Tyler Benzel and Blake Haagen.

Benzel hit .420 as a junior at Lake Highland Prep in Groveland, Fla.  Of his 36 hits on the season, the infielder had 18 extra-base hits, including four homers, 12 doubles and a pair of triples.  Benzel scored 23 runs while driving in 20.

A Danielsville, Ga., native, Haagen threw 38 innings with a 3-2 record and a 3.30 ERA.  He recorded 20 strikeouts and seven walks as a freshman at South Poly University (NAIA).
