Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns Geaux Dancing for First Time in School History

View Bracket (*pdf)

For the first time in school history, Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns will play in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Louisiana-Lafayette (25-8), the no. 11 seed, will play 6-seed Marquette (25-6).  The Golden Eagles are ranked no. 22 in the nation in the latest AP Poll.

Marquette, the third-place finisher in the Big East, makes their eighth tournament appearance.  The game will be the first meeting between the two schools.

The first round game in Austin, Texas is slated to begin around 1:30pm on Saturday, March 17 and will be aired live on ESPN and ESPNU.

The Cajuns go back to where their season began, as UL opened the 2006-07 slate in the Texas Basketball Classic.  UL played three games at the Frank Erwin Center, winning a pair, while falling to then-no. 25 Texas without starters Jeanenne Colbert and Yolanda Jones and reserve Courtney Ratliff.

The Sun Belt West Division Champion-Cajuns are one of nine schools making their first NCAA Tournament appearance, joining Belmont, Delaware State, Gonzaga, Maryland-Baltimore County, North Carolina-Asheville, Pittsburgh, Prairie View A&M and Robert Morris.

UL and Pittsburgh are the only at-large selections making their first appearance.

AUSTIN, Texas-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns first appearance in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament did not go as planned, as the Cajuns dropped an 87-58 decision to No. 6 seed Marquette.

The 22nd ranked Golden Eagles improve to 26-6, while the Cajuns finish the best season in school history with a 25-9 mark.  Five of the Cajuns nine losses came against ranked opponents.

The Cajuns finished the game shooting 33 percent from the floor including just 16 percent from behind the arc and 53 percent from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles enjoyed 50 percent shooting from the floor and made 20-of-21 from the stripe.  Marquette held a 47-34 edge on the boards - the second worst rebounding margin for the Cajuns this season.

Jeanenne Colbert and Sonora Edwards led the Cajuns on the afternoon.

Colbert finished the game with a team-high 17 points.  She added five assists, but committed five turnovers.

Edwards added 11 points and was the only other player in double figures.  The junior center grabbed seven rebounds to tie Alicia McDaniel for team-high honors.

Both Christina Quaye and Krystal Ellis led MU with 17 points apiece.

Ellis, a first-team All-Big East selection, began the game with a three pointer and followed her trey with a lay-up to give the Golden Eagles a quick 5-0 advantage.

The Cajuns offense was almost non-existent in the opening minutes of the game.

Baskets by Onna Charles and Yolanda Jones cut the Marquette lead to just 5-4 with 15:25 to play in the first half.

Marquette then went on 25-3 run over the next 8:13 to take a commanding 30-7 lead with 8:12 remaining in the first half of play.

During the run, the Cajuns committed four turnovers and missed 10 field goals and three free throws.  Eight different Marquette players scored in the run.  The Cajuns’ only points came by way of a McDaniel jumper and one free throw by Jones.

Colbert ended the run with a triple from the top of the key.  The basket cut the Cajuns deficit to 30-10 with 7:08 to play in the first half.

A three-point play by Jones with 5:40 to play in the half sparked a 10-0 run by the Cajuns.  After a free throw by Colbert, Courtney Ratliff netted a lay-up to cut the MU lead to 35-19.  Colbert then converted the next four points for the Cajuns.  She drained a midrange jumper and converted a break-away lay-up.

The Cajuns’ run cut Marquette’s lead to just 15 points, 35-20, with less than three minutes to play in the half.

The Cajuns would never be closer, as the Golden Eagles used a 9-0 run to close out the first half.

Jones picked up her fourth foul with 2:34 remaining in the first half.  The two ensuing free throws by Svetlana Kovalenko started the Marquette run and put the Cajuns behind 44-20 at the intermission.

The Cajuns were better offensively in the second half, but their deficit was too great to overcome.

Colbert opened the second half with a triple to trim the lead to 21 points, but the Cajuns could never get the lead under 20 points, as Marquette had an answer for everything UL was able to do.

Trailing by 29 points with 15:28 to play, the Ragin’ Cajuns put together a 9-2 run that spanned nearly four minutes.

Edwards started the run with a three-point play.  Colbert added a jumper, and after a Marquette basket, Whitney Dunlap made a lay-up to cut the Golden Eagles lead to 24 points.

Edwards converted a pair of free throws to pull the Cajuns to 56-34 with 12:23 to play, but the Golden Eagles answered 10-seconds later.
