LITTLE ROCK, Ark. –
Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns volleyball team finished the 2006 season on a high-note by posting a 3-2 (30-25, 30-27, 23-30, 25-30, 15-12) victory over UALR here Saturday evening at the Jack Stephens Center.

The Ragin’ Cajuns had five players reach double digits in kills which led to a season-high 76 kills.

Elizabeth Inman and Jessica Pattison each had 17 kills to lead the Cajuns offense. Rachel Mauti with 16 kills, Erika Castro with 14 kills and Jamara Saad with 10 kills joined them in double figures.

UALR got a match-high 23 kills from Amila Barakovic.

The victory avenged many years of frustration for the UL volleyball program. Saturday’s win was the first-ever for the Cajuns in Little Rock snapping a string of 10 straight visits in which UL came away empty.

The win also halted the Cajuns losing streak in five-game matches. Dating back to the 2004 season, the Cajuns had lost 11 straight matches that went five games.

The Cajuns (8-21, 5-13 Sun Belt) raced out to a quick 2-0 lead in the match by out-killing the Trojans (12-22, 5-12 Sun Belt) 40-28. UL posted a .385 hitting percentage and 19 kills in game one and a .395 hitting percentage with 21 kills in game two.

The Cajuns scored the first three points and never relinquished the lead. The Trojans came within one point at 26-25, but the Cajuns responded with kills from Pattison and Castro to extend the lead to three. An attack error by Ivanina Ivanova and a Pattison service ace closed out the game.

The score tied 12 times throughout the second game. With the score tied at 26-all, the Ragin’ Cajuns took the lead on a kill by Castro.

UALR got back into the match using the same method that the Cajuns took to win game one. The Trojans scored the first three points and never trailed going on for the 30-23 win.

In game four the lead changed hands several times, before the Trojans four straight points for the 19-15 lead.

Down 29-22 the Cajuns cut the deficit to four points getting three straight kills from Inman to make it 29-25. The game ended when Pattison committed a service error giving UALR a 30-25 win which evened the match at 2-2.

In game five, the score tied eight times before Louisiana-Lafayette knocked down two straight points. Down 10-9, Ivanova committed a service error. Pattison followed with her fifth and final ace of the match to put UL on top 11-10.

The Trojans pulled even on a kill by Ivanka Davidova. UL got the lead back for good when Inman and Mauti threw up a block on an attack by Davidova to put the Cajuns up 12-11.

Leading 13-12, a pair of Mauti kills sealed the game and match victory for the Ragin’ Cajuns.

The 2006 season ended for Louisiana-Lafayette. The Cajuns were eliminated from Sun Belt Tournament contention when Florida Atlantic posted its sixth Sun Belt win of the season on Friday.
